'Would you blame Hungarians for Soviet invasion?' - Von der Leyen criticizes those who 'muddy the waters' on Ukraine
"They blame the war not on the invader but on the #invaded. Not on (Vladimir) Putin's lust for power, but on Ukraine's thirst for freedom," von der Leyen said at the Globsec conference in Prague, attended by the Kyiv Independent.
"So I want to ask them: would you ever blame the Hungarians for the Soviet #invasion of 1956? Would you ever blame the Czechs for the #Soviet oppression of 1968?"
"The #Kremlin's behavior was #evil and atrocious back then, and it is evil and atrocious today," the #EU official said.
Von der Leyen also criticized Europe's pre-2022 "illusion" that greater economic integration with Russia would lead to more stability.

Polish Foreign Ministry suggests Hungary leave EU, NATO after Orban's controversial statements
"I do not understand why Hungary wants to remain a member of organizations that they dislike so much and that supposedly mistreat them. Why does he (Orban) not form a union with Putin and with some authoritarian states of this type?" Bartoszewski said.
"It is the principle that if you do not want to be a member of some club, you can always withdraw. Certainly, this is an anti-EU, anti-Ukrainian, anti-Polish policy at the moment."

France is asking the #EU to impose new sanctions to target Russian disinformation and election interference around the world, Bloomberg reported on April 24, citing a draft proposal from #France.
The proposal "would target those responsible for threatening the stability, security or #sovereignty of EU member states or third countries by undermining elections, the rule of law, facilitating acts of #violence or do so through the use of information manipulation and interference," Bloomberg wrote.
The governments of #Belgium and #Czechia also warned earlier in April that Russia was operating a disinformation and interference network targeting the upcoming EU parliamentary election.
